The ARKHAM CITY spinoff series ARKHAM UNHINGED is going finally into print this April with the launch of issue #1.

arkham_unhingedThe series had already been available as weekly digital segments that could be bought at COMIXOLOGY.  I had the fortune of reading the series already and have to admit it fills up the gaps between some of the events from Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, like Robin’s introduction story, the Joker-Penguin feud, and the story on the Joker’s one arm muscle HAMMER and he’s Penguin counterpart: the Abramovici brothers.  I think the art was very good, and the experience was worth it.  I would recommend  the series for anyone who wants to stitch together the story of the games, or just want to enjoy some Joker.  Below is what to look for in the series:

Story arcs starring Joker:

Read how the animosity between Joker and Penguin started

  • “Ruffled Feathers”     Chapter 7 pt 1
  •              ”                         Chapter 8 pt 2
  •              ”                         Chapter 9 pt 3

Read how Joker is involved with the Amodovici brothers and creates his muscle man…Hammer

  • “Separation Anxiety” Chapter 11 pt 1
  •              ”                         Chapter 12 pt 2
  •              ”                         Chapter 12 pt 3

The sewers are not safe especially for 4 of Joker’s thugs.

  • “Crocodile Tears”        Chapter 20 pt 1

Story arcs starring Harley:

Read how the Sirens knew betrayal, Harley is unleashed and things change forever

  • Gotham City Sirens” Chapter 17 pt 1
  •                     ”                Chapter 18 pt 2
  •                     ”                Chapter 19 pt 3

I saw these guys at the ORLANDO MEGACON and though I don’t collect plushies…I found these guys adorable.  They are called  Cubies,  and a are stylized interpretation plushies of Batman, Joker and Harley made by Autumn Frederickson and distributed by DAYDREAMS & GIGGLES. They had set a pre-order mailing list at the show, and I signed in just because I feel like hugging that Joker all day.  They are limited to an edition of 100 of each and right now they are selling to the mailing list but will soon be available to the public.

From the artist:

All Cubies are designed and crafted by Freddy Scribbles and limited to runs of 100, hand numbered pieces. As every Cubi is handmade, no two Cubies will be identical making each its own individual piece of artwork. Although I try to ship items as quickly as possible, please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery, longer if ordering from outside the USA.

MARK ROMANOSKI is a very impressive artist, having studied under Peter Caras, a Norman Rockwell protege, as well as having being an assistant to Tim and Greg Hildebrandt. Romanoski has produced multiple images for private collectors, Batman, Marvel and Fantasy art.

I find this piece just magnificent in the technique, at the same time hilarious in the theme.  A parody of one of Norman Rockwell’s most famous paintings (see below), Joker basically pays a visit to Rockwell’s studio and takes care of business in his usual murderous way, but being the clown he is, he decides to show off his talent at the canvas before leaving the scene. The piece has been exhibited at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art.  Please click below if you like it and leave me your opinion…

Hey, That’s My Cape! JUSTICE LEAGUE: DOOM

Review By Jill Pantozzi, Newsarama Contributor (Original article can be found HERE)

justice-league-doomI never know what to expect these days when I sit down to watch the latest animated feature from Warner Home Video. They’ve had a few titles that blew me away (Wonder Woman) and a few that disappointed (Green Lantern: First Flight), so expectations were high as I settled in for the premiere of Justice League: Doom. A great writer, great cast, and one of my favorite comic stories being adapted made me hopeful this would be a good one.

It’s incredibly bittersweet to be writing this exactly one year after creator Dwayne McDuffie’s passing. It was just a year ago I had the chance to meet the writer for the first time in person and watch the premiere of his previous feature, All-Star Superman. It was a wonderful experience I’ll never forget. We knew he already had Justice League: Doom in the works and sitting in a theater to watch his last work was tough not only as a fan, but as a journalist. I was extremely concerned Justice League: Doom wouldn’t be good and that’s what I would have to write about. Thankfully, those fears never came to fruition. Justice League: Doom is one of the best Warner Home Video films I’ve ever seen.

The plot of Justice League: Doom is based on the Mark Waid Justice League story arc “Towel of Babel.” I remember thinking what an interesting story it was when I first read it and was very keen in seeing how it would translate onto the screen. McDuffie dropped a portion of the story and changed a few major details but the essential plot remains. The Justice League is targeted for their specific weaknesses and after the dust has settled, realize the scenarios were ones Batman concocted in the event any members went rogue. In the comic, Ra’s al Ghul was ultimately responsible. In the film, it’s Vandal Savage and the Legion of Doom. The one plot point definitely not in the film? The actual Tower of Babel. But no worries, there is so much already packed into Justice League: Doom, you won’t miss it.

Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and Martian Manhunter are the members of the Justice League in the film. A surprising addition to the cast was Cyborg, voiced by Bumper Robinson. Initially it seemed as if he was being squeezed in (perhaps because of his impending link to the team in the comics) but his role was well-crafted and executed and he’s showcased perfectly. Of course, part of what makes this feature so special is the voice cast. The Trinity is played by the Trinity we came to love in the Justice League cartoon. Kevin Conroy as Batman, Tim Daly as Superman, and Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman. Even though they didn’t get to record together, the chemistry is still evident.

You’ve also got a few other JL alums and just great actors all around: Nathan Fillion, Carl Lumbly, Michael Rosenbaum, Alexis Denisof, Olivia d’Abo, and Phil Morris (Eight returning JL cast members altogether). Conroy brings his A-game, deftly delivering McDuffie’s dialogue in that particular Batman way we’ve come to expect. And the banter between characters is spot on, entertaining, and effortless. I won’t spoil too much but at one point Alfred tells Bruce, “You can eat while you brood.” Classic.

With all that takes place in the film, it’s a wonder it’s coherent but it is, and it’s tremendously entertaining. Each member of the League goes up against their rivals; Bane (so, so evil), Cheetah, Metallo, Star Sapphire, Mirror Master, and Ma’alefa’ak. The attacks take place almost simultaneously and though the action is quick, it’s always clear and definitely epic. My jaw was on the floor during certain moments and I was loving every minute of it. The drama in each of these scenes is phenomenal but it’s kicked up a notch as the team has to join forces against Vandal Savage’s ultimate goal – killing a good portion of the world’s population.

I had a few thoughts as the credits rolled. One was simply, wow. Another was, we need a new Justice League animated television series immediately. And lastly, that Justice League: Doom was perfect in my eyes and one hell of a sign off for McDuffie. Personal feelings aside, he crafted a spectacular script that has action, suspense, drama, and comedy in spades. A comic fan couldn’t ask for more. If you haven’t picked up a DC animated feature in a while, this is the one to buy.

Warner Home Video will be releasing Justice League: Doom on blu-ray, DVD and for download on February 28.

(And for the Jokerholics…great news.  As part of the “EXTRAS” included in the DVD, is the JLA animated episodes “Wildcards” part 1 and 2 with the Clown Prince of Crime Himself!!!)

I attended  the ORLANDO MEGACON 2012 this past weekend (Feb 18-19) and was quite surprised at to how fast this comic book convention has grown. This year they had Mr. Stan Lee as a special guest, and he held a panel on  Saturday about his projects and his creations.   There are are still a few things they need to do to improve in MEGACON though (like have more comic book related panels for ALL convention days), but for the most part was an incredible experience.  Here are some of the pics from the convention:

First is the waiting in line… taking what look like forever…I’m getting anxious.

Then there are the cosplayers…some of them pretty impressive:

and some where just weird…

Of course, Joker and Harley also made an appearance too from the classic to the original and innovative:

And had the chance to meet one of my favorite artists…MR. MARK TEXEIRA.  He even drew me a Joker sketch in the book I bought. He is such a gentleman… Thanks a lot, sir.  That’s why you’re one of the greatest.

NEXT:  THE GOODIES I GOT AT ORLANDO MEGACON…

From TOY FAIR 2012 in New York and SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES comes the first pictures of the new SQUARE ENIX ARKHAM ASYLUM HARLEY QUINN. It is a larger reproduction from the Arkham Asylum series 1 Harley Quinn, but with much more points of articulation and the fact that it is Harley the one including a Scarface puppet accessory instead of the original that appeared with the Joker figure.  Here are some pics:

For those of you out there following the toy industry, you probably know the 2012 TOY FAIR was held in New York this past February 12-16.  In it Kotobukiya, the renowed Japanese toy and sculpture maker has announced the release of a series of new JLA and Batman-related statues in 2012. Among them, caught my attention the one forFrank Miller’s  BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS JOKER AND BATMAN SCULPTURE from their ARTFX series.

Tentative release date of this figure is the 3rd quarter of 2012. Here is ia pic:

I normally don’t do this but this Joker story picked up my curiosity.  The author is a friend of mine and asked me to check it out and after reading the first chapter she had me hooked. I think it is a very well executed story catching the Jester’s sadistic humor perfectly in the development of an entertaining story. Three chapters have been posted. I would like to ask all Jokerholics to check her story out too and spread the word if you like it.

Author’s summary:

Robert Clearwater, a novelist who roams place to place in search of new stories, has recently moved to Gotham City with his family in the hopes of gathering inspiration for his newest story. The only odd thing about his new life is the strange next door neighbor in the abstract-looking house that likes to wear purple suits. After his curiosity gets the better of him, Robert finds himself thrown into an uneasy contract with one of Gotham’s most dangerous criminals, where any attempt to escape results in certain death for him and his family. Little does he know what kind of mind games his grinning neighbor will play with him… Rated T for language, thematic elements, and some violence. Multi-chaptered. In progress right now, updating about a chapter a week.

jokeryoungjusticeSome time ago I brought to you the Joker’s first appearance of  in the YOUNG JUSTICE series.  Back then I said (and I reaffirm what I said)  that though Mr. Brent Spiner (Data from Star Trek The Next Generation)  is no Mark Hamill, I don’t doubt he has the talent to fill in the shoes of the Clown Prince of Crime’s voice.  Part of the problem in that first appearance was that the script wrote for Joker in that particular episode was poorly conceived, but…

…Anyways, given that the series can be better written, I want to say that Mr. Spiner also needs to work a little bit on entonation and purpose of the voice (kind of understanding what makes Joker tic).  And above all, he has to WORK ON THE LAUGHTER.

Joker’s laughter’s is just chilling.  When you hear him laugh, you should know nothing good is coming from this clown.  Yes, he is charming, but he is also scary. His laughter will make you soil your pants…  I have an example here and though I have to admit that my friend LORDJAZOR’s dubbing sounds like Hamill (his talent with the Joker voice), the whole point of the comparison is to show what a little change in mood and purpose of the voice actor can do to the presence of a character on the screen.  JUST…LISTEN…

THIS IS MR. BRENT SPINER’S RENDITION of JOKER

And theSAME PASSAGE, but DUBBED BY LORDJAZOR.

NOW…..Which one sounds better?  I know the answer, do you?  I’m sure Mr. Spiner has  time to get it right.

Other  posts I’ve made regarding LORDJAZOR’S Joker can be found HERE, HERE and HERE .

And a million thanks to LORDJAZOR for dubbing this  for the fans ( and it helped me since I was dying to write this little note).  You can hear more of LORDJAZOR’s voice magic on his YouTube channel HERE

In the past I have said that I’m not impressed by the British theatrical version of JOKER in BATMAN LIVE, but the more videos I see, the more curious I become as how well, do comic book characters (as iconic as the Clown himself, or Scarecrow, or Two Face) can translate to the theatrical media.

Here they don’t have the benefit of the CGI tricks or the stunts double-action scene editing.  This is all live, so the margin for error is greater and the physical demands are much more… well, demanding.  I’ve collected a few videos from YouTube that i would like to share, and you guys let me hear what you think

Just click on the windows below to see a summary of BATMAN LIVE!

I THINK THIS IDEA IS GAINING INTO ME… AND DON”T THIS HARLEY LOOKS A LOT LIKE HER SUICIDE SQUAD COUNTERPART??
