GOTHAMJokerOK, I will admit I am not happy about the demise of the character of Jerome Valeska from the series GOTHAM, but in a sense I can see one reason why we could not have had him turn onto the Joker (much to my regret).  This is what I was thinking…

  1. Joker is an unknown.
    1. No one know who Joker is.  Part of his mystique was his anonymity, and that gave him power because in true nature…he could be anybody he wants to be and made it very easy to disappear into the multitude of people in the city.  When the police knows the identity of a criminal, it gives them a certain power over him, and normally it is a matter of time before he is arrested.  I would have to admit that in the Gothamverse having a Joker whose past is known (and it would have been easy to tie Jerome to Joker)  will in some way take away from the character. When Joker makes his final appearance in Gotham, he has to come out of nowhere, taking the city by surprise and embarking in a wave of sensational crimes like it has never seen before.  A kind of force of nature if you may call him that, that is primal, without ties to a past or a place.  Only then he can become the Joker that Batman deserves.

That said….

Certainly anarchy is a very powerful and liberating concept.  Joker took it and amplified it in Nolan’s DARK KNIGHT, and in a sense drives the concept of the character even in the comics but not everybody can be the Joker…only the Joker can be the Joker.

It is true that the idea of chaos and mayhem are just concepts, that anybody could embrace to become the ultimate maniac…but Jerome did it so well that is tremendously sad to see such a good actor like Cameron Monaghan that had given so much to the character only to go in such a quick, senseless way.  I would have preferred to see Jerome do one of those Joker escapes, where everybody thinks he’s dead only to return later with a vengeance…that in my opinion would have been more deserving of the performance.

The people at FOX have set the standards for their most famous homicidal maniac way up in the sky in my opinion.  The new and final Joker, whenever he arrives will have to take Jerome’s  ‘insanity virus’ and take it to the extreme.  Is that even possible?

Yes, the Joker is definitely above any definition of insanity and goes to any limits he has to go to get his point across, but GOTHAM is a show based in reality.  With the limitation of the media to root the characters in a ‘real environment’ how far can they take the Joker? Will they really find someone like Jerome out there?

I found the idea of people just going crazy killing people for fun, after seeing Jerome’s footage on the news a little farfetched.  It is not normal human behavior.  Just because you see someone killing on TV does not mean you’ll think it is fun and go out to try it yourself, but then , Gotham is a strange city.  Maybe there is an underlying low degree of madness in its citizens and they need an inspiration to take it to the highest levels of depravity.

I don’t know…maybe it is just me being a Jokerholic here and adoring Cameron’s performance in the series, but I am divided into deciding if KILLING Jerome was really the best outcome for the character…hope that FOX did not make a mistake here and let go an awesome character that could fill the future clown’s shoes.

For now…Thanks Cameron for an unforgettable performance.  Jerome will be missed, but you showed your caliber as an actor.  Best wishes in the future…

There are a bunch of new Joker and Harley Quinn figures coming out this year and like any good capitalistic society none of them are really cheap so it is important to be careful when choosing what to collect and why… especially when we are no Donald Trump nor Bill Gates but hard working people painfully saving our dollars for the little pleasures of life…

Usually I have no problem selecting what I want to collect as I am mainly a JOKER collector but when it comes to Harley Quinn, I am very picky with what I can and will buy and right now I have a problem maybe the fans out there can help me decide…. So please look below and give me an idea of what Harley Quinn statue I should select for collection…they are all SO BEAUTIFUL, but I’m no millionaire.

I want the Sideshow Arkham Asylum Premium Quality Joker figure  being releases April/July 2016: $450

Bats36-00aI was just going to put a comment to my post on CBR’s interview with Snyder about Batman #38 when I realize that he has turned into a LARGE assay…sorry for this, but I really wanted to touch a few things here. Please…bear with me.

Ok, now to my opinion.  I had been waiting some time for this story line since the last one…though well written, hinted me to a transformation of Joker into this gory Halloween monster that lost all the essence that has made him a lasting villain in the Batman Universe for the last 75 years. His “insanity” had been taken to an extreme that have made it even a stranger to those who have followed his evil deeds for decades. Don’t take me wrong…the story was WELL WRITTEN (even in those homoerotic undertones that sometimes were sprinkled over the main story), but I was worried that this new ghoulish faceless clown was going to be the standard of the new DC 52 continuity. I was not too thrilled by the idea, to tell you the truth.

Fortunately, the new storyline reinstates the Joker in the continuity of the DC Universe as we, the fans, really want to see him (and I sigh in relief). A large tsunami of chaos and perversity with the only goal of proving a single point: ‘No matter how hard you fight me, no matter how many times you kill me, you’ll never defeat me. I’m more than you ever will be. I’ll always be here. In every corner, in every alley even if you’re not looking.  Because I’m part of this city, of every citizen and I am even part of you Batman; you just didn’t see it before and I will show you now so sit tight and enjoy the show.’

And Joker now returns in all his glory…and WHOLE PERSONA (thanks Mr. Snyder)…to bring to the city of Gotham his favorite brand of pure and absolute chaos.

That is what Joker loves and that is what we fans love see him doing.  That is what made Ledger’s Joker famous. He is so outside of the regulations of society, that there are no bars or limits in his behavior. He is disturbed (HELL YES HE IS!), but that does not weaken him. Instead, it makes him in my opinion stronger.  A force to reckon with; a true scary enemy that does not conform to standards of madness or greed, or anything you know might drive a criminal and you really can’t measure in any way.  And how do you find a weakness on something you can’t neither understand nor predict? Scary thought…even for the Batman, I’m sure.

About his origins… I agree  with Snyder in when he says that Joker is really not insane in the clinical sense of the word.  Outside of society’s standards yes, but Joker in my opinion is a very bad man with a very disturbed sense of good and evil, not a nutcase that needs a padded cell all the time.  He’s calculating, cunning,  and he definitely has his own agenda.

And Batman  knows it too. He’s never being deceived by the Joker’s so called “madness”.

We are the fools that can’t conceive such a concept in human behavior and quickly label someone so deranged as “CRAZY”.  He just likes to be evil.  He rejoices in other people’s suffering.  He rejoices in chaos…

Still, reinventing Joker is like swimming in choppy waters, I’m sure no one knows better than Snyder himself. (and a brave man he is by proposing just ANOTHER origin for the Clown Prince of Crime to add to his already large repertoire) because this could quickly get out of hand and become so cheesy and flat, that his will be all a waste of time to accomplish just…NOTHING at the end. We could end with a Clown Prince so fantastic and mystical that we lose track of the real meaning of being Joker.

But Snyder’s abilities as a writer have been well cemented with his previous successful storylines (Court of Owls an example).  I think this new Joker is in capable hands to set the new questions and mysteries surrounding our Clown Prince of Crime in the 52 Universe. Questions that hopefully future writers will be able to try to answer in stories that would add dimensions to this new Joker mythos.

And why am I enjoying this new Joker story line so much? Because it is fresh, it is mysterious, and so far…ambivalent (is Joker’s  secret real, or one of the multiple origins he likes to create for himself as another lie from the master manipulator he is?). With Joker we’re never sure what to expect.

I also believe, that as long as we don’t lose perspective of the man underneath the clown face, this new vision of a man who is probably as old as Gotham city itself offers a lots of opportunities to explain his survival through the ages (Remember, assuming previous stories still apply in the 52 Universe Joker has been electrocuted, beaten to a pulp, shot more than once, hit head on by a truck, fallen from buildings, and lost his face that he “miraculously” regrew).

And this new and refreshing beginning also offers countless of new venues to experiment with the character.

What made this man the way he is? We have seen from long living villains like Vandal Savage, Ra’s Al’Ghoul (even Marvel’s Apocalypse) that long lives tend to cause this already twisted souls to eventually lose their empathy for the human race. They feel superior and outside of the norm.  Is this what happened to him? If so…why finally settle in Gotham?  With this kind of immortality, one would imagine that Joker would have had travelled all over the place, right? And what is this hinted connection with the Court of Owls? Why has this obsession with Batman lasted this long (75 years is a very long time).  Is Joker enjoying seeing his enemy get old and weak gives him a new sense of pleasure of his own superiority?

Then we have to consider that this might be one more of Joker’s lies.  One on top of countless others he has made over his life to hid what or who he really is, because the man he was is not important. Only Joker matters now.

We’ll have to wait until Snyder finishes his “last” Joker opus to see what really in store for our favorite ever smiling, deadly Clown, don’t we? So bring the next issue forth I say and let’s see where this story takes us…

batmanrobin14coverSee, when you start to hear things like Joker’s return will be influencing all this titles (Catwoman, Batgirl, Nightwing, Batman and Robin, Suicide Squad) makes the little girl in me squeal with joy.  Are they really going to show that Joker is indeed a “FORCE OF NATURE” and is able to turn the schemes of heroes and villains alike upside down and become a true “AGENT OF CHAOS”?

Yes, I know I’m quoting DARK KNIGHT Joker here, but though I have to admit I loved late Ledger’s portrayal of my favorite villain, what I like most is what Nolan did with the character.  He brought  the villain from the flat pages of a comic book to the dimensions of a world that closely resemble ours, making Joker into a more realistic menace than we have been used to. And that just terrified us.

For too long, Joker has just annoyed the hell out of Batman, then back to the asylum he has gone, only to repeat this vicious cycle over and over again through the ages with no real trascendence in HIS REAL WORLD. Just count how many Jokercentric stories DC has made in the last 20-30 years.

But the Clown refuses to stay in the bleachers and watch, he is not the type that likes routines. Joker says:  No more Mr. Nice Psycho Clown, Gotham…This is the new me and Joker is ready for his closeup now and he’s doing it by causing a megaquake within the Batman (and some of DC’s) universe.

This rebirth has been promised as the worst nightmare for the Batman family and Gotham, and though promises are just promises until we see the facts, the real issue here is that Joker is going to demonstrate his real prowess, what he does best. Turn world’s order upside down and twist good and evil together in one tight knot.

The question that rises is…would DC fulfill his promise and bring us a Joker that is worthy of the name?

In the past we have seen many editorial decisions been taken on the view of how profitable it is or not, and if it is…how can it be make it even more profitable forgtting about the content of the story. Don’t take me wrong. I don’t mind DC making profit on his creations..after all it is the base of a healthy economy, but changing characters’ core in a way that they become almost irrecognizable from the ones we have loved for decades, well…that is just unforgivable and unfortunately, that is what I am seeing hapenning to villains and markedly, to Joker himself.

We are promised a Joker that will rock our world, but look at the advertising of the event all around and what do we see?  We do not want to see Freddy Krueger, nor another Leatherface, even less a mindless murderer who just adds victims to his body count for a space in the Guinness books of records.  (We have enough of those in the comic books, like Victor Zsazs–well pointed out by a friend in this very forum).  We don’t need a murderer for the sake of murder or gore, we want a  new and improved Joker worthy of the new 52 generation.

My friends Laughing Fish and Antonia have expressed their worries too as to where DC is taking the Joker reboot, and I share those worries too, but why worry now and not just wait till the story is done?  Well, because by then it might be to late to mend errors.  After all this is the Joker we will have to deal with for the next 100 years  and we’re scared of what is going to be like….

My passion for villains comes not from the fact that I like to do evil (PLEASE! nothing could not be farther from the truth), and that is not what this site is for either.  This site stands to honor the very embodiment of what heroes and common folks need to defeat.  Fear, anger, rage, hate, chaos…and before you all go around and call the guys with the white coats and straitjackets to pick me up let me explain why.

jokerlastlaugh01You cannot enjoy the ability to see if you don’t know what it feels like to be blind. You cannot praise light, if you didn’t have darkness  to compare it to. How could you tell if something is sweet if you did not know what sour taste in your mouth?  You cannot appreciate goodness and kindness if you do not know evil and selfishness. We cannot understand Batman’s triumphs and perils without a Joker to compare him to.  But Joker is much more than just the Dark Knight’s antithesis… right?

Joker (like most successful villains) is the very embodiment of our own faults, mishaps, defects and our darkest selves and desires.  Joker is the cake that you know looks scrumptious but you know will give you a heart attack.

That is why his character has endured the trials of time for close to a century now.

And yes, I am saying there are “Jokers” living inside us and I mean…all of us.  We fight with those little Jokers every day, hoping to win and be better people than we were the day before.  That is why characters like Joker, Darth Vader, Hannibal Lecter, Severus Snape or Loki endure so much on  the literature and arealso enjoyed in the big screen.  They are us…up there, clashing with  with the other part of us….(the hero) for a common goal, make a change, and if they can be defeated, so can our inner “jokers”. Life might look simpler without the evils of the world, but let’s face it…life would be EXTREMELY boring if we did not have a challenge or two to confront. As contradictory as it sounds…it is the villain who brings the best in the hero  At least that’s how I see it.  Fighting the bad (both inside and outside) should make us better, give meaning to our lives and makes us value what we believe, have and do. We need villains as much as we need heroes to defeat them and the closer these villains resemble us, the more terrifying they are.

That said, in a kind of tangent discourse, just means that in entertainment (comics, movies, books) we enjoy villains that are a lot like us. We are not midless cattle pasturing in a grassy plain.  The same way we are capable of good deeds, we also manipulate, we lie, we confuse, we take adventage of others, we break the norm, we jump over the obstacles to get to our goals, we want to see those we blame for our circumstances to pay accordingly.  That is why we can empathasize with a villain that in some many ways like us.  Take away those similarities, turn him into an automaton with a machine gun  and endless rounds of ammo and he becomes flatten, insipid, distant and unfortunately untrascendent in his media.  (continues next page)

batman_jokerpromoThought I was just going to leave this as a footnote to my previous post on Greg Capullos’s warning about the Joker’ look  (that you can read HERE), but it became more of an statement, so decided to make it a whole post….sorry guys.  Bear with me.  This are just my opinions

Ok, a few things I wanted to point out from this article:

1. “He really is going to obviously, have a new look,” Snyder said. “At the same time, we want it to echo his iconic look.”

So the change is dramatic, but not out of the charts horrific? I would really see how they could pull that one out since the Joker has literally lost his face. I understand the new look issue, this is a whole new universe and definitely after the success of Ledger’s Joker, the public is probably ready for a much more “scarred” Clown Prince of Crime. Joker can be scary and more threatening, but giving him a set of “real scars” will be much too close to Ledger’s Joker’s appearance and though many loved Ledger’s reinterpetation, I don’t thiik the fans want a Ledger copycat (Ledger J belongs to the Nolanverse). They just want a sensible, terrifying reinterpretation of an icon, while keeping what has made him the perennial nemesis of the Batman in his long lived comic run and hearing them say: “…he’s still himself at his core.” . Hope they can keep that promise.

2. But then, my expectations get stunted when I hear say “Now I can go down the road of, like, Texas Chainsaw Massacre stuff”

I REALLY TRUST YOU Mr. Capullo as much as trust Mr. Snyder plotting this new chapter in Joker’s presence in the DC Universe, but remember…you are not writing a horror flick here, and you promised keeping Joker’s core. Joker is not Leatherface, nor Freddy Krueger neither is he Jason, He is the Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime. But still, I respect your artistic freedom to reinterpret Joker for the modern audience.

3. When Capullo said that in Batman #0 …“ the biggest challenge is drawing the Red Hood gang, and having to make some pill helmet look cool and look bad-ass. ”

Is the artist implying that he’s also planning on including a new origin version for the Clown Prince of Clown? Well, if this Joker is that different from the one in the Pre-52 universe, it might need his origin revamped for the new times and new audiences, but I hope that is not adding another page to the already large file on Joker origin stories out there. Some well made (Killing Joke blackflashes), others would have been better if they never existed (like Lover’s and Madmen that truly never added any dimension to the Joker or his origin). I will be looking for this Batman origin retell, and see if DC has finally decided to do more character oriented stories. If it worked for Chirs Nolan in The Dark Knight trilogy, it might work in comics book too. Again we don;t want a Nolanverse copycat, Joker fans just want well written stories, that seem to be lacking lately in the DC line-up.

4. “We’re turning the Joker up a notch, you know? If you can turn the Joker up any higher.”

I can see why Capullo is getting to, After TDK, we have learned to see Joker in a more menacing, and dangerous way. And let’s face it…he made money. He is really a force of nature that Batman needs to contend with, but at the same time the phrase makes me shudder. How much higher could you turn up the Joker’s behavior before turning him into a thristy bloody killing machine, thus losing the core of the Joker we have learned to love in comics. Remember Joker is more than just a murderer, he is (in my humble opinion) the twisted version of Batman. An evil twin brother, the chaos of the world against the order of the Knight.

5. And I was thrilled when Capullo admitted that Joker’s return will affect not just Batman, but many other Batman related comics. The Clown’s return will reverberate all over Gotham City and probably the DC’s New52 Universe: Remember to check out:

Batgirl (A no brainer, since it was the Clown Prince of Crime who crippled Barbara Gordon. Would she fight the demons from that horrific night at the same she fights this new terrifying menace?)

Batman and Robin (Still can’t forget that wonderful Joker phrase that he was just “…differently sane”)

Suicide Squad ( who would not want to know what will happen when Harley Quinn realizes that her puddin’ is back. How will this new Joker see her old henchwoman now that he is rebonr?)

Nightwing

Red Hood and the Outlaws (Again, Jason’s transformation into the Red Hood is direct result of what he went through after Joker “killed him”–assuming they keep DEATH IN THE FAMILY as cannon in this new stroyline. How would Jason react to the Clown’s return?)

Teen Titans ( this one I need to see why it woud be such an important interaction…the new robin?

Catwoman (in the past pre-52 Jokerhas had storylines with Catwoman, but how this new Clown relates to the Feline Fatale? Is tere more than meets the eye and a new secret connection that needs to be revealed ? That might be interesting to see)
