  1. Batman #0 may be one I’ll have to pick up. 😉

Why didn’t they release an Arkham Asylum variant vinyl Joker mask? Good detail on the mask though. But seriously, if you’re going as that Joker for Halloween, just use face prosthetics. They’re not that hard to find and you can find alternatives to latex glue if you’re allergic to latex. Masks just never look good, and the responses from people you’ll get if you actually make your real face look like the Joker’s will be so amazing you’ll never choose to wear a mask on Halloween again.

I can just imagine. So many Harleys and Jokers this year for Halloween. Soooooo many. I went as Comic!Harley last year and got a lot of favorable reviews; I bet there’ll be a million Harleys this year. I’m always one year ahead of the trend for Halloween. In 2008 I went as Ledger!Joker, the next year everyone went as him. This year I’m doing another Joker costume, but genderbent. So basically, female Joker. Oh yes, your little Laughing Fishie went there, darlings… >:)

    • Indeed, and what’s the saddest part? Almost nobody dresses like the classic Joker any more. What was wrong with the old comic or even the BTAS version. Nooooo….everybody is TDK and though I am a big fan of the film and Ledger’s legacy, I would like to see more cosplayers dressing like the old classic.

If I find any at NYCC, I will definiitely will be taking some nice pics!!!!

      • Around my neck of the woods you don’t see many Jokers around at all anyway, not even the Ledger variants. It’ll definitely be nice to have more Jokers around… but still. Too many of the same is boring. Nothing worse than going to a costume party and finding out someone went as the same thing as you.

There was one cosplayer I saw once that was ahead of the trend a few years back who did an *excellent* Batman: Arkham Asylum Joker, with the prosthetics and everything. He looked just like he stepped out of the game or the comic books, it was spooky. The scariest part? His eyes – he used almost pale whitish-green contact lenses, and it made him look just evil. He was a good actor too judging by the photos, the gaze he gave the camera was just plain chilling and soul-witheringly acidic, like ice cold sulfuric acid. That look stared into your soul. Gave me chills, and that’s just from a photo! Everything from the costume to the makeup was excellent, high-caliber work. Apparently he had it professionally done… and for a moment, looking at that photo, I almost thought the Joker had finally found a way into our world and had come to take it for his own. It was only a matter of time what with his fourth-wall breaking tendencies and tip-offs to the reader. He’s made it very clear several times he can see us beyond that mystical later between fiction and reality. If I had actually been there in person to see him I might just have started shaking in anticipation of a nasty killer joy buzzer shock, to be honest with ya. Just perfectly done in every way, and I wish I could find the photos again, but alas they have been lost to the internet aether…

Just goes to show that if you put time and effort into a costume, you can really bring a character to life – and it’s always, always well worth the time and effort to make something look real rather than rely on a mask, unless you’re doing a character like Catwoman or Batman that relies on a mask, cowl, or some sort of other face-obscuring garment. Even then, depending, you can use make-up to make an expressive mask – I did that with my Harley costume, and I got so many props for it that it was ridiculous. And this wasn’t even at a comicon, this was at a Halloween party at a bar!
