Today I bring to you 2 pieces of Joker art….(in part because I am not posting often enough). Hope you like them.
First comes this piece from Daniel HDR who is presenting some of his pre-NYCC commissions online in his TUMBLR. I like the pose, and definitely working on watercolors is not easy task… Lucky person who gets this beauty!!!
Then the next piece comes from cover artist Francesco Francavilla. He posted this on his TWITTER account. It’s simple, monochromatic, but the drastic contrast of the darks and lights sends an obvious message: “Look at my throne of dead babies…I am one dangerous clown” I love the layback pose, obviously inspired by the KILLING JOKE. Always loved that Hawaiian shirt he wore on the graphic novel…
Gotta say, I am really loving J’s baby throne there. Hooray for Killing Joke tributes! And the watercolors on the other painting are just awesome. I’m lucky if I can even get enough color on the brush to watercolor with.
Im not a big fan of this type of at. I am addicted to see details on drawings, bu the light and shadow contrast makes up for the detail.
As for the watercolors in the top drawing…I can get color on my brush, it is keeping the constant tone where it kills me. My watercolors always look patchy. That is why I admire Daniel’s talent.
Maybe that’s me. I actually really like this kind of artwork personally. I LOVE seeing interplay of dark and light, shady looking stuff, abstract stuff. I love interplays of colors that are unique. To me, some of the simplest things can be the most beautiful. But I see what you mean by detail – I’m like that with writing. I want to see more and more detail. I want to be shown, not told, and it’s a big pet peeve when there’s not enough description. I put a TON of detail in my own writing, and I still think it’s not enough. I’ve struggled with purple prose sometimes because of that.
